After a Suicide Attempt: A Guide for Family and Friends

It can be an emotional and confusing time when someone you care about attempts suicide. This booklet guides readers through what can be expected at the hospital, as well as informing them of their rights and the rights of their loved one(s). It includes a general understanding of what someone struggling with suicidal thoughts or behaviour may be experiencing, along with tips about caring for the loved one (safety plans) and themselves (self compassion) through this difficult time. A list of resources and references for further reading are also included.

Hope and Resiliency at Home Manitoba

We all have a natural tendency to protect and care for family and others who we feel close to. This can be difficult to do if we are not caring for ourselves as well. Becoming overwhelmed can cause us to lose the ability to offer the assistance we were previously capable of, and leave the person in need of support feeling abandoned. This resource provides information and resources on how to look after personal wellbeing, while encouraging wellness and resilience with others.

Mental Health and High School: A Guide for Students

Studies have shown that mental health problems can impact a student’s academic performance, which makes the fact that between 10-20% of Canadian youth will experience a mental health problem at some point rather alarming. Regardless of developing a mental health problem or illness, adolescence can be an overwhelming time as a person struggles with developing physically, socially, and emotionally. This resource is divided into sections which cover questions youth may have about mental health and illness, how it can impact their life at school, and ways in which they can move on.

Youth and Self Injury

Self injury itself is not a mental illness, though it is usually a sign that a person may be experiencing a mental health problem or illness. This resource explains what self injury is, how it is different from trying to die by suicide, it notes warning signs, and offers some reasons a person may engage in this activity. It also offers tips for helping yourself, if you are engaging in self harm, or a loved one if you suspect they may be engaging in self harm.

Every Person’s Guide to Self-Compassion

Compassion is an essential part of interacting with other human beings. Research has shown that babies who are denied nurturing surroundings do not develop normally, and our need for positive human connections is not something that disappears. What is often overlooked is self compassion. This pamphlet discusses the misconceptions associated with harsh self criticisms and motivation, and highlights ways that self compassion can help alleviate anxiety and depression, give us hope and the strength to begin making changes. It highlights the work of certain researchers working on understanding self compassion, and provides tips for how to begin practicing this essential skill.

Teen Talk

Teen talk is a youth health education program provided by Klinic aimed at providing information and resources for youth from a harm reduction and prevention education perspective. The website offers accurate, non-judgmental information on a broad range of topics important to youth to support healthy decision making. It also presents links to other online resources important to teen health, a list of Manitoba phone lines, youth counseling resources, safe spaces to hangout after school or overnight, as well as a list of Teen Clinics in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba.

Sources of Strength

Sources of Strength describes itself as a comprehensive wellness program that works to use peer leaders to change norms around codes of silence and help seeking. The program is designed to increase help seeking behaviours and connections between peers and caring adults. Sources of Strength has a preventative aim in building multiple sources of support around individuals so that when times get hard they have strengths to rely on.
